83% of Americans plan to travel this summer, budgeting an average of $2,200 each, according to the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). This represents an increase from previous years. The 2023 survey, sampling over 1,300 respondents, shows 64% prioritize experiences over goods. Younger generations, aged 18-34, are leading this trend, with 92% planning trips centered on adventure and cultural experiences.

"The data reflects a strong desire among consumers to travel again," said Zane Kerby, President and CEO of ASTA. "Travel remains a high priority, and with expanding budgets, businesses have a clear opportunity to meet this demand."

Rising disposable incomes support this recovery. The US Bureau of Economic Analysis notes fluctuations in personal savings rates, yet many households maintain substantial savings, fueling travel spending. Online booking platforms like Skyscanner report a 150% increase in flight searches, indicating active consumer planning.

Travel businesses can attract consumers by offering personalized packages and flexible booking options. The ASTA survey indicates 73% of respondents prefer changeable reservations without penalties.

Luxury travel sees new trends, with increased family bookings for multi-generational trips. Jennifer Fox, President of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, noted an increase in family travel with an emphasis on creating shared experiences.

Sustainable travel is gaining traction. A Booking.com survey found 83% of global travelers see it as vital, prompting companies to adopt eco-friendly practices. Agencies that incorporate sustainability appeal to this consumer segment.

Health and safety remain crucial. The CDC reports over 70% of Americans are cautious about crowded places. Businesses should clearly communicate their protocols to reassure travelers.

Competition is intensifying. Leveraging data-driven insights to adapt to trends like experiential travel and sustainability is crucial for growth. Understanding consumer behavior can shape the industry's recovery.
