The InterContinental Kaohsiung opened on 28 September 2023, featuring 256 rooms and a design inspired by the nearby harbor's waves. Jason Moszer, Managing Director for IHG Hotels & Resorts in Greater China, emphasized Taiwan's importance, stating, "Taiwan is a key market in our growth strategy, reflecting broader trends in luxury travel across Asia." The hotel includes a restaurant by chef Huang Chih-Cheng, highlighting Taiwanese flavors and indigenous ingredients.

Taiwan's luxury hotel market is transforming, driven by increased affluence and tourism. The Taiwan Tourism Bureau reported a 50% rise in international arrivals in 2023, with luxury visitors growing even faster. IHG’s strategy includes projects like Crowne Plaza and Hotel Indigo, each reflecting local character and high service standards.

Authenticity is vital for luxury travelers who seek connections to their destinations. IHG's integration of local culture sets it apart from competitors. Patrick Cormack, Senior Vice President at IHG, remarked, "We recognise that luxury is evolving; it is about creating connections, whether through architecture, cuisine or community."

IHG's expansion influences luxury travel trends in Asia, emphasizing local experiences. Taiwan's rising middle class, with an average income of NT$1,500,000 (USD 49,000) in 2023, is shifting towards premium experiences. Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok drive interest in unique locations, prompting hotels to innovate in design and service.

As IHG grows in Taiwan, it serves as a model for luxury brands. The Taiwan Hotel Association's President Lin Chi-Hsiang noted, "The luxury hotel market in Taiwan is growing not only in quantity but also in quality, reflecting a shift towards world-class experiences. IHG's innovative approach plays a significant role in this evolution." This collaboration between local and international brands enhances Taiwan's hospitality landscape.

IHG's balance of global identity and local culture will shape luxury travel trends in Asia, enriching the hospitality sector with diverse experiences.
