HSMAI Europe's Agile Pop-Up in Amsterdam

In September 2023, HSMAI Europe's Pop-Up event in Amsterdam offered hospitality leaders a platform for agile networking. Organized by the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Europe, the event addressed the industry's need for rapid collaboration.

Caroline McGhee, Regional Director, HSMAI Europe, stated, “The Pop-Up format enables leaders to come together swiftly and tackle the most pressing issues affecting our sector.”

Over three days, attendees focused on digital transformation, customer experience, and sustainability. A July 2023 Deloitte report noted that 67% of executives view digital strategies as crucial for efficiency.

The Pop-Up's format encouraged direct conversations. McGhee observed, “Leaders can struggle with the time commitment of lengthy events. The Pop-Up's focused format allows us to dive straight into critical discussions.”

Participants shared insights, such as a hotel director discussing guest satisfaction through adapting to customer behaviors. This exchange fosters diverse perspectives.

A study by the International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IHRA) found 54% prefer shorter events with actionable insights. This reflects a shift, especially among younger professionals valuing efficiency.

As the Pop-Up ended, participants felt urgency to stay adaptable. A Brussels hotel manager said, “We cannot afford to wait for traditional conference cycles to address the issues that affect us now.”

While platforms like Zoom facilitate virtual meetings, in-person interactions remain vital. An American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) survey showed 78% of professionals believe face-to-face events build stronger relationships.

HSMAI's Pop-Up could become a model for future gatherings, with plans for similar events across Europe. This approach may reshape networking expectations, emphasizing rapid, focused interactions. McGhee remarked, “This is just the beginning. We are witnessing a shift in how our industry collaborates.” The ability to convene quickly and address challenges may soon be key to success.
