Hotel Management Evolves with Younger Travelers
Luxury hotels shift strategies to meet younger travelers' demands for unique experiences.
The InterContinental Bangkok at 973 Ploenchit Road is part of a broader trend in hotel management. In 2023, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) began converting ownership into management agreements to cater to younger generations. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts is also changing its approach. "We’re focused on expanding our portfolio through asset-light franchising," said Geoffrey A. Ballotti, president and CEO of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, during a 2023 earnings call. This strategy preserves liquidity and adapts to market demands. Data from STR Global shows that over 70% of the industry's portfolio in 2022 consisted of franchises and management contracts. This allows brands to enhance guest experiences without real estate burdens. Younger travelers prioritize authentic connections and sustainability. IHG's “Unlocking the Future” initiative integrates local culture into guest experiences, benefiting local economies. Technology plays a crucial role. Marriott International's Mobile Key technology, introduced in 2020, enables smartphone room access. As competition grows, the line between luxury and budget accommodations blurs. Accor's renovation strategy for midscale hotels with upscale offerings illustrates this trend. Global events have accelerated these changes. The COVID-19 pandemic led companies like Hilton Worldwide to focus more on management contracts. Chris Nassetta, president and CEO of Hilton, noted in 2022, “The pandemic has underscored the need for flexibility and resilience in our business model.” Sustainability remains a priority. The Booking.com 2022 Sustainable Travel Report found that 81% of global travelers prefer eco-friendly properties, driving hotels to adopt green practices. The modern traveler values sustainability, innovation, and authenticity. Hotels must rethink operations and guest engagement to adapt.
