BC Hotel Association's Video Series Showcases Hospitality Careers

A camera pans over the coastal landscape of British Columbia, capturing mountains and ocean. This is the backdrop for the BC Hotel Association's (BCHA) new initiative. Launched in September 2023, the video series highlights career paths in hospitality, emphasizing its role in luxury travel.

Ingrid Jarrett, BCHA's Executive Director, explains, "Our goal is to highlight the diverse opportunities in hospitality that extend beyond front-line roles." This aligns with a 2021 report from the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council, projecting a need for 250,000 tourism workers by 2030.

The series includes interviews with hospitality professionals, showcasing their journeys and skills. Chef Chris Whittaker from Forage Restaurant shares his path from culinary school to becoming an award-winning chef. "I was drawn to the kitchen for the community it created," he says. "Being a chef is about connecting with people."

Targeting high school students and young professionals, the initiative challenges stereotypes about hospitality careers. It emphasizes diverse skills required, from human resources to finance. A 2022 study in the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research noted a 35% increase in digital skills demand.

BCHA partners with educational institutions to provide hands-on experiences and mentorships. A collaboration with the British Columbia Institute of Technology offers students direct engagement with industry leaders.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a labor shortage, with 64% of hotels struggling with staffing, according to a 2023 report by the British Columbia Ministry of Tourism. The BCHA's initiative aims to address this by attracting skilled talent.

As the series progresses, BCHA plans to collaborate with other organizations to amplify its message. Jarrett notes, "Collaborating with stakeholders will amplify our message and attract talent across the board."

The initiative seeks to inspire future hospitality professionals. The BC Hotel Association's commitment to nurturing new talent is crucial for sustaining the luxury segment in British Columbia.
